Far Above Rubies or Clearance Sale Price?

Proverbs 31:10 “Who can find a virtuous woman?
for her price [is] far above rubies.”

Do you know a woman who satisfies the description “virtuous?” The chances are that you may have met one or two women who seem to epitomize the “virtuous woman” of Proverbs 31. However, for most of us, we may feel we fall short of this high and lofty goal. In the Parker Valley series of books, we explore the struggles that young women face in maintaining the high moral standards demanded by the “virtuous or excellent woman” of Proverbs 31.

A virtuous woman is one who is upright in all her ways. What does this really mean? Does it mean that the woman must be perfect? Certainly not, because the Bible teaches that none of us is perfect. Does it mean that she always makes the right decisions? No, because we all make mistakes. Being a virtuous woman is another way of saying that the woman always strives to uphold God’s will. Even falling short will not cause her to stop attempting to please God in all her actions. These women do exist, but are very hard to find: almost as rare as beautiful rubies!

The Parker Valley Series gives us a look at three sisters who are learning the hard way that it is not always easy to uphold the precepts of Proverbs 31. While Sondra, Jennifer and Claira all want to be “virtuous women,” life throws things in their paths that may lead to their downfall. Without the support of the teachings of the Scripture and each other, these young women could find that the situations that face them rob them of their ability to live virtuous lives. Each Parker Valley girl has to learn that only God’s love and forgiveness allow women to strive to epitomize the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31.

While the qualities of the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31 may seem unattainable, the Parker Valley girls learn that through their faith in God, they are able to overcome temptation and tribulation and hold on to the high calling of Christ in their lives. These stories are a great way to introduce teen girls to the idea that living a godly life as a Christian woman is not always easy, but can be done!
